Acquisition of Cyprus Citizenship due to Marriage 

Cyprus offers a straightforward and family-oriented pathway to Citizenship through marriage. Foreign nationals married to Cyprus citizens may apply for the Cyprus Citizenship through the M125 registration process. This option is governed by the Civil Registry Law 141(I)/2002. 

Eligibility Highlights:

To be eligible to apply for the Citizenship due to marriage, the applicant must:

• Be married to a Cypriot citizen for at least three years;
• Have legally resided in Cyprus for a minimum of two years before the application;
• Demonstrate a genuine and continuing relationship/marriage with the Cypriot Citizen;
• Be of good character with no criminal record.

For spouses residing abroad, the Citizenship application can still be submitted after 3 years of marriage. However, a letter explaining the reasons for requesting Cypriot Citizenship must accompany the application. If the couple has been married for at least 5 years and has at least one child, this letter is not required.

Application Process:

1.   Submission The relevant application form and all supporting documents are submitted to the District Administration Office.

2.  Application processing time The application may take up to 2 years to be processed, depending on the complexity of each case.

3. Approval Once the application is approved, a Certificate of Naturalization is issued and the applicant may apply for a Cyprus Identity Card and a Passport. 

Important Highlights: 

It is worth mentioning that Cyprus is among the countries that recognise the right to hold dual Citizenship.

The submission of the application does not of itself grant non-EU nationals the right to reside in Cyprus. However, non-EU nationals who wish to reside in Cyprus until the examination of their application may apply for a temporary residency permit.
