Individuals born abroad may be eligible to obtain the Cyprus Citizenship through a number of different ways, one of which is due to their Cyprus origins.
In particular, they can apply to obtain the Cyprus Citizenship if at least one of their parents, at the time of their birth, was a citizen of Cyprus or was entitled to acquire the Cyprus Citizenship due to his/her parents.
The application procedure requires the applicant to demonstrate, by providing a number of documents, the existence of a family tie with a Cyprus citizen. The procedure and application form that must be submitted varies, based on the date of birth of each applicant.
The Citizenship application is submitted either at the Civil Registry and Migration Department of Cyprus or at the District Administration Offices of Cyprus or, if the person resides abroad, at Embassies/Consulates of Cyprus.
The submission of the application does not of itself grant non-EU nationals the right to reside in Cyprus. An application to obtain the Cyprus citizenship will need to be approved before the applicant may reside in Cyprus. However, non-EU nationals who wish to reside to Cyprus until the examination of their application may apply for a temporary residency permit.
The benefits of obtaining the Cyprus Citizenship are many and include the freedom to reside, travel and work within the European Union.
It is worth mentioning that Cyprus is among the countries that recognise the right to hold dual citizenship.
