The Government of Cyprus has recently introduced substantial changes to the legal framework for naturalization of non-Cyprus nationals who apply for citizenship on the basis of their years of residence in Cyprus. You can read a summary of the key changes in our previous article *here*.
To apply for Cypriot citizenship through naturalization (by means of years of residence), applicants must pass exams of Greek language proficiency and knowledge of Cyprus Culture.
Language Requirements:
Applicants are required to demonstrate Greek proficiency at either B1 or A2 level Language Proficiency Level. Applicants must pass the government-administered exams conducted by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, and Youth.
These include the following:
- Listening: Tests the ability to understand spoken Greek through conversations, announcements, and other audio materials.
- Reading: Assesses comprehension of written Greek, including newspapers, official documents, and literary texts.
- Writing: Measures writing proficiency through tasks such as essay writing, letter drafting, and completing forms.
- Speaking: Evaluates spoken communication skills, including pronunciation, vocabulary usage, and the ability to engage in dialogue.
Knowledge of Cyprus Culture exams:
In addition to language proficiency, applicants must demonstrate an understanding of Cypriot history, culture, and contemporary society.
Exams of Knowledge of Cyprus Culture includes the following:
- Ancient and Modern History: Questions will cover key historical events, significant figures and the cultural heritage of Cyprus, including its archaeological sites, museums, and historical monuments.
- Political System (Understanding the government structure).
- Cultural Practices: Candidates should be familiar with traditional Cypriot customs, festivals, and social practices, such as Easter celebrations, traditional weddings, and local culinary traditions.
- Current Affairs (Awareness of contemporary social, economic and political issues).
The next Greek Language Exams will take place in March 20, 2025. Registrations will take place from February 1 to March 20, 2025.
The exams for Knowledge of Cyprus Culture are conducted twice a year every February and July. After liaising with the Ministry, they will announce examination dates for 2025 in December 2024
