Cyprus Fast-Track Citizenship for EU Nationals: What You Need to Know

European Union citizens employed as highly skilled professionals in Cyprus may be eligible to apply for the Cyprus Citizenship through the accelerated naturalisation procedure. This special route significantly reduces the residence period required for naturalisation compared to the ordinary process, provided that specific conditions are met.

Why become a Cypriot citizen?

European Union citizens already benefit from freedom of movement within the EU, yet many choose to become Cypriot citizens after establishing their lives and careers in Cyprus.

The Cyprus Citizenship provides a permanent legal connection with the country, full participation in its civic and political life, access to opportunities available exclusively to citizens, and the ability to pass the Citizenship to future generations, making it an attractive option for those who intend to make Cyprus their long-term home.

Who Can Apply?

EU nationals who:

  • Are lawfully residing and working in Cyprus;
  • Are employed in a qualifying Cyprus company as highly skilled employees;
  • Have been employed by the qualifying company for at least two (2) years before submitting the application;
  • Meet the required lawful residence period in Cyprus;
  • Demonstrate the required level of knowledge of the Greek language and basic knowledge of the socio-political reality of Cyprus;
  • Be of good character.

Residence Requirements

Applicants may qualify for the Citizenship after:

  • Four (4) years of lawful residence in Cyprus, provided they hold a Greek language certificate at B1 level, or
  • Five (5) years of lawful residence in Cyprus, provided they hold a Greek language certificate at A2 level.

Eligible Employers

The accelerated naturalisation procedure applies to highly skilled employees working for Cyprus Companies of Foreign Interests registered with the Business Facilitation Unit (BFU) of the Ministry of Energy, Commerce and Industry.

Spouses of EU Nationals

This accelerated procedure also extends to the applicant’s spouse, who may also apply for citizenship through the expedited process, provided that the applicable legal requirements are satisfied.

Application Procedure

Applications for naturalisation are submitted to the Civil Registry together with the required supporting documents.

Upon payment of the prescribed accelerated examination fee of €5,000 and provided that all legal requirements and supporting documents have been submitted, as per the relevant legislation the application is expected to be examined within eight (8) months.
