Cyprus municipalities are increasingly turning to CCTV for monitoring parks, squares, and even schools. Legal reforms allow such systems if supported by impact assessments and Commissioner approval.
Restrictions exist:
- Schools: cameras only at entrances/exits and perimeters, inactive during school hours.
- Public offices: allowed only around perimeters โ not inside offices or staff spaces.
- Public squares: cameras must respect the right to privacy in public life.
Cybersecurity Gaps
Digital risks also loom large. The Commissioner stresses that security gaps will always exist, but organisations must show readiness and adequate safeguards.
Private companies often lead in security investment, while the state is adapting gradually, especially with the integration of AI into public systems.
